History
The Nawang Wulan Center for Peace Studies and Development (PSPP) was established on December 19, 2018. This institution emerged from the progressive efforts driven by volunteerism, initiated by the Interfaith Network (JAKATARUB), a community and interfaith network based in West Java.
Since the early 2000s, JAKATARUB has initiated various advocacy efforts, dialogue spaces, networking, public education, and campaigns related to diversity and equality. Over time, this community-based work was seen as needing a more strategic design, which naturally required support from a formal institution.
PSPP Nawang Wulan was established to meet this need. This study center conducts research and provides strategic support for JAKATARUB while serving as a formal institutional complement for networking activities.
The name Nawang Wulan was chosen symbolically to represent the spirit of this movement. In folklore, Nawang Wulan is the wife of Jaka Tarub, a figure rarely highlighted. By adopting this name, we acknowledge that the role of women is strategic and essential.
Literally, Nawang Wulan means “gazing at the moon.” This symbolizes our collective effort and hope to attain enlightenment, knowledge, and awareness. The moonlight also represents the spirit of nonviolence, fostering compassion for fellow human beings.
